Anthony Hopkins urges fans to ‘choose life’ in sober milestone post

Sir Anthony Hopkins is celebrating 50 years of sobriety!

The 87-year-old actor took to his Instagram account on Monday to mark the major milestone of his five decades of sobriety while encouraging to “choose life instead of the opposite.”

The two-time Academy Award winner, who rose to fame with his role in the 1968 film The Lion in Winter, has been vocal about his alcohol addiction earlier in his career.

In the post, uploaded on his social media, Hopkins reflected on the moment his life changed.

“I got help and 50 years ago today was the end. Without being a killjoy I just wish you all choose life instead of the opposite,” he said.

“I realised at that point that I was having too much fun. It was called alcoholism,” he added.

While addressing those who may be struggling with addiction issues, the actor advised, “So anyone out there who’s got a little problem with having too much, check it out, because life is much better.”

Hopkins also had some words for people celebrating sobriety, saying they should take it “one day at a time.”

“I’m also going to be 88 in two days’ time, so maybe I did something right,” he further noted.

He ended the message with a sweet new year’s wish, “Anyway Happy New Year and a happy, happy life.”
